East African Consortium for Clinical Research II
Objective
- To promote networking and dialogue between researchers, communities and policy makers in order to maximize the use of health research evidence for shared knowledge management, policy change and improved health programming in Eastern Africa.
- To strengthen the collaboration and optimize the use of shared research infrastructures, capacity building resources and opportunities.
- To boost and deliver an Eastern Africa training and mentorship program promoting an increased independence and retention of African researchers, research leaders and managers in order to conduct internationally-competitive clinical trials.
- To strengthen and strategically expand South-South and North-South collaborations between researchers and institutions with a specific focus on supporting less established institutions in Eastern Africa in building capacity for conducting high-quality clinical research.
Description
Sub-Saharan Africa still experiences the highest burden of poverty related, neglected infectious and emerging and re-emerging diseases. If we are to control and eventually eliminate these diseases, there is a need for African scientists to participate fully in research to understand the burden, risk factors and research and development of diagnostics, drugs and vaccines.
The East African Consortium for Clinical Research (EACCR) II is a capacity building network established in 2009 to contribute to fulfill this need. Currently it comprises 23 institutions from 6 countries in East Africa and 8 partner institutions in 5 countries in the Europe. The consortium has its secretariat at the Ministry of Health-Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe. Activities are implemented in the 23 institutions in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan and Ethiopia.
The network is structured in five operational units called “nodes”. Three of the nodes are focusing on public health programs on three main infestions diseases- HIV, TB and Malaria. A forth node centres its activities on neglected, emerging and re-emerging diseases that burden the region – Dengue, Schistosomiasis,Cysticercosis, Hydatidosis and Ebola. Finally, an overarching training node coordinates the training and mentoring activities of the EACCR II network, especially those of cross-cutting nature.
