RISE research kicks off in Indonesia

AIGHD is proud to be a part of the RISE team in Indonesia! ‘Research on Improving Systems of Education’ (RISE) is aimed at conducting high-quality research to build evidence to enhance children’s learning levels throughout the world. RISE aims to gather and interpret data that will lead to education reform and improve learning outcomes on a global level. Indonesia has just been announced as the latest research location (research is already underway in Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania and Vietnam).

The Indonesian research consortium consists of SMERU (Indonesia), Mathematica (USA) and AIGHD (Netherlands). Sudarno Sumarto (SMERU) is the Team Leader and Menno Pradhan (AIGHD) is the Lead Researcher. During this five-year research project, the team will examine how national and district governments in Indonesia support and learn from each other in the implementation of policy towards teachers and national exams in order to improve students’ education levels. Indonesia offers an ideal laboratory to explore these issues because local districts have significant autonomy in terms of teacher management, distribution, and training. The research project will also analyse nationwide reforms that aim to raise teacher quality in hopes of enhancing students’ learning.
