On October 12th, Raph Hamers was interviewed on national radio (VPRO Bureau Buitenland NPO Radio 1) on the emerging problem of HIV drug resistance in sub-Saharan Africa as a possible threat to the success of large-scale HIV treatment. He recently co-authored a research paper in The Lancet Infectious Diseases on emerging resistance to the widely used antiretroviral drug tenofovir in sub-Saharan Africa. During the interview he highlighted some of the main challenges to the sustained delivery of effective HIV treatment in Africa, including the need for reliable drug supply systems, enhanced patient monitoring and adherence support, and access to alternative antiretroviral drugs.
