The overall objective of this project is to contribute to sustainable capacity in Rwanda and Uganda to generate an evidence base for public health policies on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
The INTERACT project is being funded by two major donors, the EU and NWO-WOTRO. The project concerns three diseases, HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and includes training and equipping institutions, baseline studies, clinical research, and improvement of case management.
The part that is being funded by NWO-WOTRO is composed of ten sub- projects: 8 research projects and two supportive projects which are conducted in Rwanda and Uganda.
The part of the project that is being funded by the EU aims to build and strengthen clinical trial capacity at two clinical trial sites in Rwanda and Uganda, to facilitate development of new drugs, prevention technologies and other interventions against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. The action will be primarily targeted at scientific, clinical, laboratory, data management, and auxiliary staff from collaborating institutions in Rwanda and Uganda; other target groups are the medical scientific community, as well as health policy makers and Ministries of Health in the two countries. In order to attain that goal, staff will be trained in Good Clinical Practice procedures; improve laboratory, clinical research and data management facilities; conduct four preparatory epidemiological studies; and improve case management regarding HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, TB and malaria for clinicpopulations at the trial sites.
