Valuing client views on health insurance

Research using a Participatory Action Approach (PAA) can engage clients, facilitate joint learning, and strengthen clients’ position in the client-provider-insurer triad. This study explored barriers to healthcare and health insurance from the client perspective. Qualitative methods were used to inquire deeply into the motives and assumptions of clients, as well as the root causes of perceived barriers. A quantitative survey, informed by well-grounded qualitative data, assessed the extent to which the qualitative findings were shared. By linking the research methods, the researchers triangulated the data and methods and validated the findings. The PAA approach used in the complex health insurance context in Ghana helped contribute to democratic decision-making to find solutions that are acceptable to the multiple stakeholders in health insurance programs: clients, healthcare providers, and health insurers.
